What is Home Dog Boarding? - Home Dog Boarding is a relatively new concept in that in the past dogs were looked after by friends, neighbours and family or went into kennels. Standards were poor and dogs were coming home in all states and with fleas and injuries. Some forward thinking individuals decided that they wanted their dogs looked after by dog lovers in the dog lover's home and they were prepared to pay them to provide the service.
Who are Lookafteryourdog? - In 2009 Steve Dalton the owner and founder of Lookafteryourdog Home Dog Boarding Service was a serving Police Officer in West Midlands Police and after serving as a dog handler he was still involved with Police dogs by running on puppies for the Police. At this time he wanted to expand his knowledge of dogs and dog training and he saw an article on Home Dog Boarding and Lookafteryourdog was born.
First dog he looked after was a dog called Jess and funnily enough the owners got back in touch over 6 years later to book her in again. From there he had over two hundred dogs stay at his home and he began to look for other like minded individuals to help him look after the dogs. From those beginnings Steve has since left the Police on retirement and is now full time growing the business and today Lookafteryourdog has 29 boarders spread over the Midlands area and expanding continually.
How do you recruit your Home Dog Boarders? - Steve being an ex Police Officer decided that he couldn't run a business that wasn't honest, trustworthy and reliable. The people he recruited all have the same qualities, first and foremost they are dog lovers, secondly they have nice, clean, safe and secure homes and gardens and their situation now means that it isn't practical to have their own dogs so they look after other peoples and treat them as if they were their own.
Do you comply with the law - All our Home Dog Boarders have licenses issued by the local Environmental Health Department of the council area they live in. By doing this we ensure that we comply with the requirements of the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 and if your boarder does not have a licence then they are committing a criminal offence and you are aiding and abetting them in that offence. All boarders are instructed to have dog tags with their name and phone number on so in the unlikely event that the dog gets separated the boarder can be contacted.
Do you have full Liability Insurance? - Yes, all of the boarders are covered by a single policy which covers public liability up to £5,000,000 and employers liability up to £10,000,000. Your dogs will also have boarders tags on them with their name and phone number so if your dog ever did become separated then the boarder can be notified. (Not happened as yet touch wood!)
How do I know my dog will be cared for? - If you look at the how does your service work FAQ below you will see that the main element is the visit. You will always go and see where your dog is staying and meet the boarders. You can discuss what will happen, where your dog will sleep, exercising requirements, feeding and general health and behavioural issues. Your boarder will look after your dog to your standards whilst you are away.
Your boarder can keep you updated whilst you are away and you will know when you return if there are any issues because dogs do not lie and their attitude and behaviour will tell you how they have been treated.
Steve also visits the boarders and dip samples on a random basis and as the owner of the business he is impartial and only wants the best for customers, dogs and boarders. If anything is brought to his attention and calls into question the integrity of the service offered he won't hesitate to take action and remove the boarder.
What if anything happens while I am away? - You will be asked to complete a one off consent form which gives us your wishes whilst you are away. Anything that happens will be reported to Steve and he will ensure that you are represented and your emergency contact informed. Your dogs health and well being are first and foremost and everything that can be done will be done. It is in Lookafteryourdog's best interests to ensure that the very best service is offered at all times to ensure our integrity and reputation is maintained.

"Hi Steve, I just wanted to say a huge thankyou to you, Sheila Werry and her lovely husband for looking after Zak. It was a huge relief to know that my dog was cared for by such wonderful people. They made everything so easy and really put my mind at rest with texts and phonecalls. They made a very sad time for me a lot more bearable knowing I didn't have to worry about my pet. Once again, thankyou, Regards Sam, Alan & Zak,
"We couldn't have asked for anyone better than Diane and Andy to look after our two Springer Spaniels, Paws and Riley, during their first time at a boarders. They were obviously superbly looked after and loved throughout their stay and we wouldn't hesitate to use them again should we need to board our dogs in the future. The mid-week picture and text from Diane was especially appreciated and put our minds at ease whilst we were away." Louise
"I would like to thank Dorothy for looking after our Bonnie so well. I think bonnie was constantly playing with cassie, and loved having the constant fuss. It made our first time of leaving her so much easier, knowing she was with someone who was competent and kind. Bonnie came home well looked after, happy and content. We would have no hesitation in using Dorothy again."
